Holidays are a time of joy and celebration. Unfortunately, these gatherings of people put more cars on the road, and an increase in drivers typically yields an increase in the number of accidents. On New Year’s, the number of drunk drivers skyrockets. The same can be said for Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving and Memorial Day. Halloween is an exceptionally dangerous day for children. More pedestrian accidents occur on October 31st than on nearly any other day of the year. Some refer to the day before Thanksgiving as “Blackout Wednesday”. This is another surprisingly dangerous day, with DUI stats through the roof.
Drunk driving is never advised, but, as you probably know, occurs quite commonly. 1/8 of drivers admit they’ve likely driven drunk over the past year. This creates a massive threat when, during the holiday season, so many drivers take to the roads. 90 million Americans take a road trip over the Christmas season. With such an increased number of drivers on the road, the number of accidents and arrests reported should come as no surprise.
Pedestrians should be careful on these days as well. Just because you aren’t in a car doesn’t mean you aren’t in danger. While Halloween is a day of superstition and fun, it should also be a day of extreme caution. This holiday ranks the highest for pedestrian fatalities. Parents should watch their kids closely as they move from house to house. Dress them in bright colors and keep them out of the road. With so many drivers drinking and texting, you’re going to want to closely monitor your children’s trick or treating.

Holidays should be a time of celebration, not a time of bereavement. 473 people were killed in auto accidents in 2009 over the Memorial Day weekend.
